Mission Schools International

Project Mission Schools International (Rwanda) Case Statement

In the densely-populated Sub-Saharan nation of Rwanda, the tragic legacy of the 1994 genocide still ripples through the country. Much progress has been made in piecing together the country, but Rwanda is still among the least developed nations in the world. Over 8.2 million people live on an average per capita income of only $370 per year. Literacy rates are low, infant mortality rates are high and the life expectancy of the average Rwandan is only 46 years.

Mission Schools International (MSI) was founded in 2008 by Brendan Kennealey to address the root cause of persistent poverty in Rwanda by building a network of secondary schools that combines exceptional education, basic healthcare, and proper nutrition. A healthy and educated workforce is critical to break the cycle of poverty and bring about sustainable growth in underdeveloped countries. However, there is often no access to education, or education is interrupted by preventable illness. MSI's comprehensive approach addresses these interrelated issues and creates the prerequisite conditions for communities to thrive.

MSI will build its first two boarding schools in Rwinkwavu, a village in the poorest region of Rwanda. The schools will serve a total of 720 students and focus on science, technology, and entrepreneurship. The schools will be located adjacent to the Partners in Health (PIH) flagship hospital in Rwanda, creating a symbiotic relationship that gives MSI students access to great healthcare and PIH patients access to exceptional education. The ultimate goal is for MSI graduates to break the cycle of poverty by not only receiving jobs, but more importantly, creating jobs and building an economy.

MSI has created an innovative model for sustainable economic development. Its founder is a Harvard Business School graduate and is a dynamic leader with an impressive track record as an education entrepreneur. ExecWB is uniquely positioned to provide MSI with the support it needs to focus on what it does best: build schools, educate children, and transform communities. The ground has been laid, but there is much to be done, and your help is needed.

ExecWB Will Help Mission Schools International

At ExecWB we draw on our international network of executives to assist with program implementation. Our goal is to provide top talent to Mission Schools International at no cost to them.

Help us build these schools, educate the children of Rwanda, improve their health, and create economic development so when these children grow up and have families of their own, they are educated, healthy and prosperous.

ExecWB is looking for executives who are interested in leveraging their time, talent, and treasure to make a positive impact on peoples' lives. There is immediate need of help from business leaders to:

  • Assist with computer repair and network setup
  • Establish system requirements for internet and communications connectivity and recommend solutions to meet those requirements
  • Set up an accounting system for MSIwith the capability of accurate bookkeeping and basic financial and management reporting
  • Determine system requirements and recommendations for a CRM system capturing contacts and tasks related to fundraising and development
  • Baseline against other models of international school construction and implementation
  • Provide advice on the long-term financial model for the construction and operations phase, including investigating the possibility of revenue generating activities that will mitigate the amount of donor funding required
  • Investigate grant opportunities to fund MSI's efforts from the various multi-lateral agencies
  • Assist with a logistics, warehousing and transportation strategy for the delivery of donations and items not available inside Rwanda
  • Develop the overall business plan for MSI

Initially we need executives to operate in a virtual capacity to further refine requirements and develop specific milestones, metrics and outcomes. As the program progresses we will use resources to send volunteer executives for short-term deployments to assist with the hiring of local staff positioned to implement program areas. We will actively use our network to provide ongoing operational and strategic support to Mission Schools International in all management areas.

Throughout program implementation there will be key milestones and outcomes established and measured to assess our engagement and maximize positive impact on the MSI project.

"Twebwe nk'ababyweyi, twishimiye uyu mushinga. Ntn shuri twari dufite hafi yacu. Iri shuri rero rije ari igisubiyo cy'ikibazo twari dufite. Biyatworohera kugera ku bana bacu no kubakurikirana mu nyigire yabo ku ishuri. Mbese ni igitangaza Imana idukoreye.”

"As parents, we are so happy at the project. We had no school near us. This school comes as an answer to such a problem. We will access our children and follow them up easily. This is a miracle God has done to us."

Financial Contributions

We need your talents and skills. And we need financial resources to help assist with the building of schools. Can we count on you for a personal donation of $10, $100 or $1000? Does your company have a foundation that could donate on a larger scale $10,000, $50,000, $100,000?

Your financial donations will help us strengthen the infrastructure of NGOs like MSI. Your donations will fund travel and lodging for volunteer executives deploying to the field to offer their business talents in person. Also, the funds will augment NGO's budgets and provide services like phone and computer connectivity and strategic investments that many NGOs currently do not have in their budgets.

With your help we will increase the impact of Mission Schools International's current donor dollars while at the same time improving the return on investment of future donations.

Build The Network

We encourage you to help us spread the word if you know of others in your network that would be interested in volunteering or contributing to the MSI project or another Executives Without Borders project.
